Grandpa Malcolmâs Open Face Apple Cake
A classic with a wink, a whisper, and a whole lotta love.
Let me tell you something about Grandpa Malcolm: the man believed in two things â no shortcuts in life, and always using good butter. His open face apple cake was rated EXCELLENT on his recipe - with a note to try it with peaches. It was a go-to move for just about everything â new neighbors, old grudges, Tuesday night bridge, and more than one family peace treaty. Itâs buttery, simple, wildly nostalgic, and the kind of dessert that doesnât pretend to be something itâs not.
No fancy frostings. No hidden fillings. Just honest ingredients, a bold fruit-on-top moment, and a cake that says: âYes, Iâm that good.â
And letâs be clear â this is not a âthrow it in a pan and hope for the bestâ situation. Grandpa Malcolm would tap the oven twice, give it a squint, and remind us: âNot all ovens are created equal. Donât trust them. Trust the cake.â Wise words.
Use plums if youâre feeling European, apples if youâre feeling sentimental, and sprinkle cinnamon and sugar like you mean it.
By the time itâs done baking, the topâs all jammy and glistening, the edges golden, and the smell? Letâs just say your neighbors may show up âjust passing by.â Cut it into 3â squares â but donât expect them to last.
Now, grab your apron, crank that oven, and give this gem the love it deserves.
And donât forget to send us pics â Grandpa wouldâve insisted.
