Unwrapping the Full Story: Why We Refused to Launch Until We Found NatureFlex

(And how this film actually works behind the scenes)

At Steiner’s, we don’t just bake happiness. We deliver it — wrapped in purpose. From the moment we dreamed of our brand to the first fresh-frozen coffee cake that hit our packaging line, we made a promise: we’d do no harm. Not to ingredients. Not to taste. And definitely not to the planet.

That’s why we refused to launch until we found the right film. We didn’t simply switch to NatureFlex — we held the line until it existed for us.

Why we wouldn’t compromise

Recyclable plastics? They sound good. They feel good. But the reality is messy: Many “recyclable” films end up in the wrong bin, or not processed correctly, or worse—linger for decades as microplastics.
We asked ourselves:

“Are we okay with something that looks sustainable but behaves like its cousin who just sits around forever?”

Answer: No.
So we waited. And researched. And found NatureFlex through Futamura Group (yes, a Japanese-inspired global film-maker who means business).

Home composting facts

Why we picked this path

Because we believe packaging isn’t an afterthought — it’s part of our product story.
We couldn’t say “gluten-free, nut-free, plastic-free” and keep a standard plastic film bag just because it’s cheaper. That would be hypocrisy baked in.

We chose compostable vs. recyclable because:

  • Recyclable doesn’t always get recycled.
  • Compostable means end-of-life clarity — you open the bag, eat the cake, you know what happens next.
  • It aligns with our brand: happiness baked in. No plastic left out.

The magic of NatureFlex — how it's made & how it breaks down

Made from wood pulp, not oil
NatureFlex is derived from renewable cellulose: wood pulp from responsibly managed forests. Not petroleum. Not some secret plastic polymer that nobody talks about.

Performance-first
It isn’t just “green.” It protects our cakes — moisture, oxygen, aroma: all the stuff that matters for gluten-free & nut-free goodness. NatureFlex delivers strong barrier performance, transparency, gloss, printability.

Certified home-compostable
Unlike many packaging films that claim to biodegrade, NatureFlex meets serious global composting standards (EN 13432, OK Compost Home) for both industrial and home composting.

Cradle to gate footprint
Futamura did the work: life-cycle assessment shows that NatureFlex’s carbon footprint is substantially lower than an older film model.

How it ends its life
Don't be sad! Roll it up. Put it in the home compost or dedicated facility. It breaks down into water, CO₂, and biomass—not microplastics or toxins. It starts as wood pulp, ends as earth-returned material. Mining-free, guilt-free.

The bottom line

When you pick up a Steiner’s bag of flour, cake or brownie, you’re not just picking up deliciousness.
You’re picking up integrity.
You’re saying yes to real ingredients. Yes to better packaging. Yes to a future that doesn’t get trashed.

At Steiner’s Baking Co. — we bake like superheroes.
And superheroes? They don’t pollute the planet they’re trying to save.

Real ingredients. Real impact. Zero plastic.
