The Day My UPS Driver Made Me Speechless (and What It Means to “Make It”)

By Jen Steiner Pool | Founder, Steiner’s Baking Co.
It happened today — one of those little moments that stops you in your flour-dusted tracks.
My UPS driver — the same guy who’s been dropping off boxes at our door for weeks — smiled and said,
“By the way, I’m a retired pastry chef. My wife has Celiac, I’m gluten intolerant… and we order your coffee cakes.”
I just stood there, speechless.
Because what do you even say when the person delivering your packages also happens to deliver the ultimate compliment — not with words, but with loyalty, taste buds, and trust?
The Unexpected Joy of the Unexpected
We work hard at Steiner’s.
Like, really hard.
This little bakery brand was built from the ground up by me and my mom, Nanci — our original Creator-in-Chief.
She’s the one who started it all, experimenting in her kitchen decades ago after being diagnosed with Celiac — back when “gluten-free” meant “good luck.”
Together, we’ve baked through every kind of challenge — ingredient shortages, packaging nightmares, long nights labeling boxes by hand. The kind of hard work that smells like cinnamon and coffee cake and pure grit.
You chase consistency, quality, sustainability — all the things that make your product worthy of a second bite. You try to do right by your customers, your team, your planet.
And then, one random Tuesday, your UPS driver turns out to be a retired pastry chef who’s been secretly buying your stuff because, in his words,
“It’s the only gluten-free that actually tastes like the real thing.”
That’s the kind of feedback that doesn’t show up in your sales dashboard — but it’s the one that keeps you going.
How Do You Know When You’ve Made It?
Here’s the thing: “making it” doesn’t look like a viral moment or a magazine spread (though hey, we’ll take those too).
Sometimes it’s quieter.
It’s the delivery guy who chooses your product on his own dime.
It’s the mom who finally finds a cake she can serve without a side of apology.
It’s the team that believes in your mission enough to keep baking through the burnout.
Those are the moments that remind you — you’re not just in business.
You’re in the business of making people feel included, seen, and satisfied.
A Little Gluten-Free Magic
Our proprietary flour blend is our superpower — the heart of every Steiner’s bake. It’s what makes our coffee cakes soft, our brownies fudgy, and our mission matter.
We don’t just bake gluten-free.
We bake freedom for people who thought they had to give it up.
So yeah — today, our UPS driver made my day.
And maybe, just maybe, that’s what “making it” really looks like.
Here’s to the unexpected joys — the ones that show up right on your doorstep.
